No. 2 Roger Federer earned his seventh (7th) consecutive Wimbledon final title match and a record 20th career Grand Slam final by defeating No. 24 Tommy Haas of Germany 7-6 (3), 7-5, 6-3 during Friday’s opening semifinal match on Centre Court.

Federer, after years of chasing, is poised to surpass Pistol Pete Sampras. A win this Sunday would give Federer his 15th Grand Slam singles championship, breaking a tie with Sampras for the most in history. It also would give Federer a sixth Wimbledon title and a return to No. 1 in the rankings.

While the 23-year-old American No. 6 Andy Roddick earned his third (3rd) Wimbledon finals appearance by defeating home favourite Andy Murray (3) of Britain 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7), 7-6 (5) in Friday’s second semifinal match.

The 2003 U.S. Open champion Roddick, still seeking a second major title, dropped to his knees, leaned forward and covered his head with his hands after finishing off Murray.

Men’s

Roger Federer (2) became tenis’s greatest champion as he beat Andy Roddick (6)  5-7, 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 16-14 in an epic match 4 hours and 16 minutes to claim his 6th Wimbledon title. It was a record 15th Grand Slam title for Federe, surpassing Pistol Pete Sampras who was watching in the Royal Box along with fellow legends Bjorn Borg and Rod Laver.

Women’s

Serena Williams claims 2009 Wimbledon ladies’ singles champion after defeating last year’s champion, her elder sister Venus Williams (3) in the final 7-6, 6-2. This was Serena’s 11th grand slam singles triumph and her third Wimbledon singles title.
