Chicago is among the International Olympic Committee’s four (4) finalists for the 2016 Summer Olympics last Thursday. The other three are Tokyo, Japan (8.4 score); Madrid, Spain (8.2), and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (6.5). Chicago scored 7.0 with Doha, Qatar. Rio would become the first South American city to host the Olympics if ever it wins. This sets up a high-profile contest featuring major cities from the Americas, Europe and Asia. The winner will be voted through secret ballot by the IOC on its Copenhagen, Denmark session in October 2 next year.
The 2008 Summer Olympics as we all know by now will be in Beijing, China this coming August 08, 2008. The 2012 Summer Olympic Games, officially known as the Games of the XXX Olympiad will be celebrated in London from July 27 to August 12, 2012.
One of the cities who did not make it is Doha, Qatar which is said to have the potential and even tied at third with Chicago in technical assessment but was turned down by IOC because it was proposing to hold the Olympic Games from October 14-30, 2016. The July to August months were preferred by IOC to avoif the searing summer heat in October. Doha would have been the first to host the games in the Middle East.
Chicago is hopeful to bring back the Olympics to the United States since the Atlanta Games in 1996 despite problems cited by IOC on Chicago among other things - transportation and finances. But Chicago respects the assessment and evaluation done and they said that they won’t make any alibi to defend themselves instead they will take it as a challenge to correct such deficiencies.
Tokyo, Japan has the highest score in the technical evaluation as to infrastructures, transportation, venue, security and finances. Tokyo, where the 1964 Summer Games were held, hopes to bring the Olympics to Asia eight years after Beijing, China this 2008.
